SUSE’s Michael Miller and IBM’s Ross Mauri on the Future of Linux Innovation

The history between SUSE and the IBM mainframe goes back more than 15 years, observed Michael Miller, SUSE’s Vice President of Global Alliances, Marketing and Product Management, and Ross Mauri, General Manager, IBM z Systems, during a keynote conversation at SUSECon 2015. Today, 28% of the IBM installed mainframe capacity around the world runs Linux, it is in 82 of the top 100 clients around the world, and it has been growing at a 45% compound growth rate over the last decade. The bottom line, Mauri said, is that Linux is a phenomenon that has changed the world, is growing rapidly everywhere, and it is in enterprise and in mainframe computing, Mauri said.

IBM and SUSE are continuing their joint technology innovation. Recently, said Mauri, IBM rolled out the new LinuxONE product line, a whole new Linux-focused high-end system that can scale up and scale out with all the security, capacity, and performance IBM clients have come to expect; produced its own KVM distribution for IBM z Systems; and also introduced new community clouds to enable easier access to Linux on the mainframe by developers and university students.

The companies are also continuing to collaborate on the business side, said Miller. With the new LinuxONE systems, IBM introduced a new elastic pricing model for for IBM hardware and software, and SUSE will be embracing that elastic pricing model as well to enable a complete solution. And, in terms of community, the joint innovation continues as well. Among other ongoing joint efforts, there is the new Open Mainframe Project, a Linux Foundation Collaborative Project of which SUSE and IBM are cofounders. “We hope more and more of the community joins us as we explore new technology innovations that can serve our mutual customers and really push things forward for their businesses,” said Mauri.

Elastic Pricing and More – News for
LinuxONE Customers

The new IBM LinuxONE portfolio provides flexibility in pricing and resources that allow enterprises to pay for what they use and scale up quickly when their business grows.

In a new SUSE Conversations blog, Meike Chabowski, Product Marketing Manager for Enterprise Linux Servers at SUSE, writes about IBM and SUSE’s longstanding partnership and how the companies work together to innovate technology and business solutions to address evolving business-critical enterprise needs while controlling IT infrastructure and budget. “We are announcing a new pricing model to help organization unleash the power and potential of Open Source solutions on the mainframe that we call Elastic Pricing. Elastic pricing allows organizations to quickly and cost-effectively realize the benefits of this new solution with pay-as-you-go pricing based on resources consumption,” explains Chabowski.

New Online Cloud Marketplace for the IBM Power Systems LC Line

IBM has opened up a new online cloud marketplace for its new line of IBM Power8-based Linux servers – the Power LC (Linux cluster) Line, which was introduced last month. The new Power Systems LC servers are the first to be based on technologies and development efforts contributed by OpenPOWER Foundation partners. The Power Systems LC servers are offered in three different variations: the Power Systems S812LC, the Power Systems S822LC for commercial computing, and the Power Systems S822LC for high performance computing.

“The LC line of offerings is much more than the systems themselves. They will be delivered with a client experience that is common and comfortable for Linux clients. In 4Q, these systems will be purchasable on the web,”  notes Stefanie Chiras, Director and Business Line Executive, Scale-out Power Systems at IBM Systems and Technology Group, in her blog post, titled, “Experience IBM Power Systems in a whole new way.”

In additional blogs and articles, the impact of the new Power Systems LC line of servers is discussed.

“How companies ingest, mine, manage and leverage this data can unlock unlimited possibilities and opportunities for both the business and the customer. But, we cannot emphasize enough that without the right underpinning infrastructure, a once galloping enterprise can be left in the dust by those acting on their data – fast. That’s why today IBM has furthered its commitment to powerful and cognitive systems of insight, unveiling a whole new Linux class of IBM Power Systems designed for clusters and clouds: the LC Line of servers,” notes Doug  Balog, General Manager of IBM Power Systems, in a recent blog post, titled “Introducing the all new Power Systems LC Line of servers.”

Read more about the new LC line in blog posts by Ptak Associates: IBM Power Systems LC: Buy On-Line with Faster Performance, Lower Cost Than x86 Systems! and Ubuntu Insights: Ubuntu with IBM Power Systems LC Models for Big Data.

POWER8, Cloud, and Juju Charms – A Compelling Story

A  new developerWorks blog post looks at the benefits of POWER combined with Juju Charms.

“Juju certainly isn’t the world’s best kept secret on quickly-and-easily modeling and bringing services to the Cloud, but what may be a more closely kept secret is that because IBM POWER8 supports Ubuntu, the power of POWER, coupled with the magic of Charms, brings open source cloud services modeling and orchestration to the world’s premier open server platform!  Consequently, whether you know about Juju and Charms, but not POWER, or vice-versa, you will find an unbeatable combination by combining the two,” Bob Dick writes.

Neo4j is Now Available on POWER8

Neo Technology, creator of the Neo4j graph database, has formed a partnership with IBM to offer Neo4j on IBM POWER8. This partnership offers a number of benefits to enterprises by combining real-time graph processing with the capabilities of IBM hardware to scale up.

As a leading graph database, Neo4j helps business leaders manage larger volumes of data and generate insights from their data relationships, as well as act on those insights in real time. However, applying those insights in real time at the point of touch requires the ability to support extremely high transaction capacities with massive volumes of data at scale. With this partnership, enterprises can now overcome their big data challenges both with Neo4j to extract meaningful, real-time insights from data relationships, and with POWER8 that allows them to scale their graphs to massive proportions. IBM Power Systems can provide up to 56 terabytes of extended memory space with CAPI flash architecture on a single machine, accommodating graphs of never-before-seen size and scale.

McObject and IBM Set New Records for Speed and Stability for Capital Markets

A new report from the Securities Technology Analysis Center (STAC) demonstrates the performance value of McObject’s SQL-based eXtremeDB Financial Edition database management system (DBMS), running on IBM POWER8 S824L Linux server, executing a time-series data analytics workload. The STAC-M3 Benchmark suite is the industry standard for testing solutions that enable high-speed analytics on time series data such as tick-by-tick market data.

The combination of eXtremeDB and the POWER8 system achieved new records in a set of 17 STAC-M3 tests, including the best-ever results for jitter. Adding together the mean response times for these 17 tests,eXtremeDB on POWER8 took 44% less time than the nearest competitive solution while using just one-third the number of cores. This solution provides a significant cost/performance benefit to clients in the financial industry.
